Physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors receive 4 or more extra years of training after medical school. They are also known as physiatrists.
The Origins of PM&R
Physiatrists have been at the forefront of clinical excellence since the field’s beginnings. International entities such as the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (7) and Cochrane Collaboration (8) continue to synthesize evidence in an attempt to develop clinical guidelines for various medical specialties, including PM&R.
In the wake of both world wars, services were established worldwide to treat disabled veterans and others who had acquired disability from disease or injury. Increasingly, these services focused on independent living as an important aspect of quality of life.
Throughout the years, many factors have shaped the development of PM&R. These include country-specific religious, philosophical and socioeconomic influences; the health history of a particular population; and the impact of wars. These influences have also shaped the development of PM&R education and research.
The NYMC PM&R Residency Program
The NYMC PM&R Residency Program trains residents in both musculoskeletal and spinal cord injury medicine. The residency offers extensive training in various aspects of rehabilitative care and participation in research is encouraged. Faculty in the department work to advance knowledge through translational and transdisciplinary research that has resulted in publications and presentations at national conferences.
Residents are given progressive responsibility and autonomy, while supervised by experienced attending physicians. They also participate in cadaver labs where they learn clinically relevant musculoskeletal anatomy. Grand rounds, a weekly case conference, and electrodiagnostic training sessions are provided to residents.
The Department’s main teaching affiliate, Westchester Medical Center (WMC), is a tertiary/quaternary care hospital that serves as a level one trauma center, primary stroke center, and burn center and houses the Brain and Spine Institute. It sponsors 17 ACGME-accredited residencies and advanced fellowships.
The NYMC PM&R Clerkship
During their clerkship in PM&R, students learn to identify impairments that impact function and the range of treatment options. Students also become skilled in performing a comprehensive physical examination that includes neurological and musculoskeletal evaluations and eliciting reflexes.
The NYMC PM&R Clerkship at the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) in Edison, NJ, consists of an inpatient rotation with didactic teaching as well as an outpatient rotation including prosthetics and orthotics, wound care and integrative medicine. The 535-bed hospital is a tertiary/quaternary care center and level one trauma center, a primary stroke center and houses an Institute for Neurological Disorders.
Physiatrists specialize in a wide range of conditions, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, pain management and electrodiagnostic medicine. The field offers many opportunities for advanced fellowship training.
In 2009, AAPM&R launched this peer-reviewed journal for the physical medicine and rehabilitation physician. It is indexed in MEDLINE. The journal continues to help advance education and impact the specialty through timely delivery of clinically relevant research and review information.
